The nominees for the 2nd Annual Global Poker Index American Poker Awards were announced yesterday. The list of nominees across 11 categories was found via votes from around 80 members of the poker industry, including PokerWomenNews. A jury will determine the winners of each category, and the award ceremony will take place at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, on February 25.

Even though most of the nominees are men, it’s worth noticing that two of the categories consist of 50 percent women. In the important Breakout Performance of the Year category we find Cate Hall and Kelly Minkin alongside Joshua Beckley and Asher Conniff. Needless to say both Hall and Minkin got our votes, but it’s positive to discover that a significant part of the poker industry has chosen to nominate Minkin and Hall as well.

Even if Minkin does not win the category, she is sure to be honored with the award for 2015 GPI Female Player of the Year as she claimed the top spot of the Player of the Year Ladies list in front of Esther Taylor-Brady and Cate Hall.

The experienced TV and video presenters Kara Scott and Sarah Herring have made their way into the category Poker Presenter of the Year along with Joe Stapleton and David Tuchman. And on the list of Charitable Initiative of the Year Maria Ho and Vanessa Rousso are indirectly among the nominees as they hosted the Chad Brown Memorial Tournament.

Tatiana Barausova 6th in Macau Millions – Natasha Barbour Women’s Event Champion

The 2016 edition of Macau Millions attracted a huge field over three starting flights. 2,343 entries ponied up HK$3,000 to play the event, which created a massive prize pool of HK$6.1 million – with HK$811,000 (US$104,000) reserved for the winner plus a HK$100,000 (US$12,800) entry into the 2016 ACOP Main Event.

On Day 3 and down to the nine-handed final table Tatiana Barausova had a shot at the title, but a miss-timed bluff versus Guancheng Wu left the Russian pro short, and she was eliminated shortly after in 6th place for HK$185,000 (US$23,839). Quan Zhou from China wound up winning the event.

On the other side of the globe Natasha Barbour went all the way in the $600 Women’s Event at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure. The event attracted 51 runners, and Barbour defeated Sabina Hiatullah heads up for the title and the $8,340 up top. Hiatullah took home $6,040 for her runner-up finish. After the win a happy Natasha Barbour took to twitter, declaring she “broke the streak”:

China Poker Championship: Yaxi Zhu First-Ever Champion

PokerStars Caribbean Adventure. Aussie Millions. Macau Millions. The poker year 2016 has come off to a great start with high and low stakes tournaments all over the globe.

Today the inaugural HK$9,000 China Poker Championship played down to a winner in Macau. Only players with a Chinese passport were allowed to register, and 149 runners seized the opportunity, incl. Juicy Li (Sixiao), Wang Fei and Yaxi Zhu.

Even though Juicy Li started Day 2 as the chip 789bet leader, she was eliminated from the event outside of the money, when all the chips went in on a flop of 6-5-2. Juicy Li, who had a pair of deuces in the hole, had flopped a set, but her opponent, Sun Ning, with 6-4 in the hand, made sure to river a straight to send the Chinese pro out of the tournament.

Unfortunately Wang Fei was eliminated before the final table as well, but with 15 players getting paid, she was able to collect HK$17,600 ($2,262) for her 13th place finish.

On Day 3 and down to the final table of eight, only Peng Miao had more chips than Yaxi Zhu, and with four players left Peng Miao was still in the lead. After the elimination of Sun Ning in 4th place and Zhang Weiyi in 3rd, Peng Miao and Yaxi Zhu were heads-up for the title. After two hours of play and a raising war where Peng Miao decided to call Yaxi Zhu’s all in with 4-2 vs. Zhu’s AK, Zhu finally emerged victorious making two pair on a board of A-7-5-2-K. Besides the trophy Yaxi Zhu takes home HK$304,400 ($39,115) for the title.

Tom “durrr” Dwan’s Million Dollar Poker Challenge is comprised of 50,000 poker hands at tables with stakes of $200/$400 or more. After the last hand, whoever has the biggest bankroll will either win $1.5 million from Dwan, or Dwan will win $500,000 of his opponent’s money.

It wasn’t long after Dwan’s challenge that Phil Ivey took Dwan up and agreed to compete… and then David Benyamine and Patrik Antonius followed. These are three of the biggest names in online and live poker. Phil Ivey is a five-time WSOP bracelet winner, Benyamine has one bracelet, and although Antonius has more than $750K in WSOP winnings, he doesn’t wear a bracelet. Dwan has no WSOP bracelets either, but these guys are just about all in the same league, expect for Ivey, who blows them all away. Online opinion polls show that Dwan has no chance against Ivey. Although there are some who believe this whole thing is hype and the challenge will never actually take place or that Dwan will never follow through and end up paying out of his pocket when he doesn’t complete the challenge. But Dwan is a pretty cool guy who would not likely make such a joke out of himself.

There are questions though, surrounding the challenge. Like when and where it will take place. It is most likely that FullTilt Poker will win the free advertisement off this one. Ivey is with FullTilt and both Benyamine and Dwan are known to play at FullTilt. Ivey would not be able to play anywhere else online anyway because his Team FullTilt contract prevents him from doing so. There will also have to be someone neutral to monitor the players and ensure all Dwan’s rules are being followed fairly.

Some might remember back in October 2008 when Dwan attempted to organize a $50K heads-up online challenge with the best of 3 or 5 no limit hold ‘em matches, with a starting chip stack of $300, and blinds would stay the same. This Situs Slot Gampang Menang challenge never materialized, but apparently Dwan loves the competitive aspect of poker just as much as he does all the money he wins. By the way, he’s already a top-runner for the biggest winner of 2009.

Amarillo Slim Beaten Down and Robbed!

“Amarillo” Slim Preston, hands-down one of the greatest living gamblers and poker players of all-time, was rushed to a local area hospital in Amarillo, Texas, this past week after being beaten and robbed of his possessions and a large amount of cash.

The robbery, which occurred when Preston was trying to collect on a $3,000 debt that was owed to him, not only costed Slim $8,000 in cash and an $85,000 ring he was wearing, but he also suffered a broken jaw, hand, and thumb!

According to police reports, he was led to an open field in his hometown of Amarillo by someone planning to give him a 4-wheel drive vehicle as collateral on the debt, but was then subsequently beaten down and blatantly robbed on the spot.  The person was not identified in the reports, however, local police authorities are hoping to find the culprit as soon as possible.

The 80-year old Amarillo Slim is one of the pioneers of poker and was responsible for bringing the game itself to the forefront of Vegas lore when he, Sailor Roberts, and Doyle Brunson traveled to and from Texas and Nevada as road gamblers and “hustlers.”  He is also one of the few players to have won the WSOP Main Event more than once in his career and is also a member of the coveted Poker Hall of Fame.

It seems like the market’s response to Atlantic City’s huge fore-front experiment was a very negative one. This involved cutting out dealers & chips, and then replacing them with automated poker games.

The Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino has had to remove their 14 automated poker tables after experimenting them out for the past few months. The process was that the electronic games would automatically shuffle and deal video-type cards. These cards would appear on a large display screen at the centre of the table. The aim of these automated tables was to attract the younger generation of gamblers out there but this didn’t quite succeed. For example, poker player Ira Cohen from Brooklyn New York, says he much prefers a live environment with real dealers and the human friendly atmosphere they generate. Meanwhile the casino union clubs held the fear that the automated table games could have increased dealer layoffs.

Although there is certainly a luck element associated with Poker, Poker is still largely a game of probability, and its most popular derivative, Texas Hold’em, is no exception to this rule. Many players of this game fail to maximize their gains and winning percentages, by failing to adhere to some extremely basic principles. By following these basic strategies, you will be able to enhance your ability to succeed in Texas Hold’em:

Fold on Poor Starting Hands – This is such an important rule. If you do not have a decent pocket hand (first two cards dealt to you), then always fold. A propensity to play bet and play on after receiving a poor pocket hand, is certainly a recipe for disaster, and a way to lose your money.

Typically, you should only be playing the top 25 (or so) of the top hands. These top hands are: A-A, K-K, A-K suited, Q-Q, A-K unsuited, A-Q suited, J-J, 10-10, A-Q unsuited, A-J suited, 9-9, K-Q suited, 8-8, A-10 suited, A-J unsuited, K-J suited, Q-J suited, A-8 suited, K-10 suited, A-9 suited, J-10 suited, Q-10 suited, K-Q unsuited, 10-9 suited, and A-10 unsuited.

Flop must be Worthy – The flop (next 3 cards) must be beneficial to your hand. If it is, then play on based on how strong your hand is; if not, then fold if another player bets.

Drawing Hand must be established by the Flop – If you are playing a drawing hand (e.g., a straight or a flush), then make sure that you have at least four of the five cards needed by the Flop, or you should fold, unless you have an alternatively strong hand.

Moving beyond the Flop with a non-drawing Hand – If you are not on a drawing hand by the Flop, you should only continue beyond the Flop, if you have a high-ranking pair with a big kicker, or a poker pair that is of higher rank than any card showing on the Flop (this is known as an “overpair” to the Flop). Additionally, if the Flop contains three cards of a particular suit (and you do not hold any pocket cards with that suit) or if the Flop contains three consecutive ranking cards (that do not fit in with your potential for a straight), that is also a good time to fold, as the odds of one of your competing players getting a flush or straight exists.

Estimate Potential Damage – After the Flop, estimate what the highest possible hand an opponent may have, and what the likelihood of your opponent getting such a hand might be. Use this as a gauge when deciding to play on or fold.

Press Hard with Great Hand – When you know that you have a great hand (and possibly have the best hand), push your opponents to the limit (in No Limit Hold’em this might mean going All In). In this scenario, press your opponents hard, and do not drag the game out, letting your opponents get extra cards, which could allow them to come back in the game.

Fold When your are Losing – Always fold your hand when you know you are beaten, and do not hang around in the game, betting frivolously. The premise here is to always minimize your losses. Never call a bet, just to verify what cards your opponent had in a hand. The possible exception might be in No Limit Hold’em, when there is certainly a larger degree of bluffing that occurs. In this scenario, make sure that you do not throw away a decent hand superfluously, especially if you are familiar with the bluffing tendencies of some of your opponents.

Be Cognizant of your Seating Position – Always take your seating position into account when you are deciding to play on or fold in a given hand. As an example, if you had a pair of pocket 2’s in the first position of the table, that would be an excellent reason to fold, pre-flop. However, if you had the same pair of 2’s in the last position or in the Small Blind, and no other player raised prior to you (pre-flop), if there are a good number of players in the pot ahead of you, you may want to continue on with a pair of 2’s, and see how the Flop looks, due to pot odds.

Pot Odds need to be greater than Actual Odds – You need to be able to discern between these two types of odds. “Actual Odds”, as the name implies, are the precise mathematical chance of an event occurring. “Pot odds”, on the other hand, is the ratio of money in the pot in relation to the amount that are being asked to bet, in relationship to the actual odds of an event occurring which would give you that pot. The relationship between the two, is most easily explained, via an example. Let’s assume that your pocket hand is (8, 9), and the flop is (J, Q, 8) – in other words, you need a 10 to complete a straight. The odds of you getting that “10″ on either the Turn or the River, is approximately 5-to-1. Depending on the amount of money in the pot, in a scenario where you and only one other player are remaining, the pot odds of you winning would be 1-to-1, which is clearly inferior to your actual odds – in this scenario, you should fold. However, in the same cards scenario, if there are 7 players remaining in the hand, your pot odds would be approximately 6-to-1, which are better than your actual odds — hence, in this case, you should remain in the game and play on. In this latter case, your pot odds exceeded your actual odds, so it would behoove you to remain in the game.

Requesting insurance each and every time it’s available will effectively cancel out your initial bets and limit any traction you may gain by winning either bet.

Not Obeying the Casino’s Table Rules

Just because the game favors conservative play, however, doesn’t mean that players should be afraid to bet big when the odds are in their favor. When your cards are mid-level, such as ace-two (a hand known as a soft 13), and the dealer’s face up card is weak (say a 6 or lower), you will be in a strong position to make a winning hand. As such, doubling your bet in this scenario is a strong move, and will likely net you good money in the long run.

Similarly, some players might be nervous about the concept of splitting pairs. Aces and eights in particular should be split every time they are played, as they offer the best chance for a victory and a hefty payout.

Refusing to Surrender

In blackjack, as in war, there is no shame in surrendering. In fact, sometimes it is the only way to reduce one’s losses and live to fight another day. Hands like 15 and 16, which are too high to comfortably hit, but too low to comfortably stand, are an ideal time to surrender, as there is a high chance you will lose should you hit, but an equally high chance that a dealer will bust if they do.

Read the following passage and find within it the three most important words: “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that disbelieveth shall be condemned.” (Mk.16:16). Did you find them? What about these:

“And he said” (Mk. 16:15) are the three most important words for those who would question what Christ says here. Whatever he says, anything he requires, should be accepted and obeyed without quibble or dispute simply because he said it. The very fact that the one who has “all authority” (Matt.28:18) said it should forever end all haggling over whether or not what is said has any application to me. Jesus said it and that ought to settle it.

“He that believeth” are the most important words for those who would confine belief to mental assent only and try to make any “doing” on our part some “work” that must be excluded. Jesus called belief a “work” (Jo.6:29) and was clear that “doing” something was a requirement if one would enter the kingdom of heaven (Matt.7:21).

“And is baptized” are important words for those denying the necessity of baptism. This same Jesus appeared to Saul (later Paul) on the road to Damascus and told him to go into the city and be told what he must do (Acts 9:6;22:10). And what was he Holy Vible told? “…arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on his name” (Acts22:16). If “doing” anything is unnecessary, Jesus’ saying “it shall be told thee what to do” is strange. Likewise, if baptism is unnecessary, Ananias’ “wash away thy sins” comment is difficult to explain. And, in our text, it seems that Jesus connected salvation with baptism because he connected it with the next three important words…

“Shall be saved”—These three important words tell me at least two things: (1) baptism is essential to salvation (as previously established) and (2) any past sins can be forgiven. Paul spoke to the Corinthians of sins that are as vile and evil as it is possible to imagine (1Cor.6:9-10) and said “And such were some of you: but ye were washed, but ye were sanctified, but ye were justified…” (1Cor.6:11). Truly, baptism is required to wash away sin and it will cleanse any and all transgressions.

“He that disbelieveth” are important words for those who seek to make baptism unessential. Jesus said, “Why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” (Lk.6:46). “Calling” (an indication of belief) apart from “doing” nullifies the calling. All who “come” to the Lord and “hear” his words must “do” them (Lk.6:47)—including being baptized. Anything less is unbelief.

“Shall be condemned” are the three words of importance for those who trivialize anything Jesus said here—or elsewhere. He said in another place, “He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my sayings, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I spake, the same shall judge him in the last day” (Jo.12:48). It is a fearful thing to fall into God’s hands (Heb.10:31) and especially so when the one who will be our judge (Acts17:31) has commanded obedience and we have failed to comply.

Surely you realize that no three words in our text are the most important to the exclusion of the others. They must be read—and obeyed—as a unit. Please read these carefully and respond obediently.
